SPORE
If you're even slightly interested in computer games and you haven't yet seen the video of Will Wright's SPORE, then go see it.

You may wish to tie your jaw in place, because it's going to drop.

I believe "whoa" would be a suitable response. That game could actually make GCSE Biology interesting.

OK, whoa was not a sufficient response. It's like the omni-game - you can do everything.

"Whoa!" was pretty much my response and I'm only 10 minutes into the video!

I can see two problems (both from the same source)...

"It includes S-E-X! - We can't have our children exposed to that depravity!"
and
"It encourges the killing of small furry animals - PETA want it banned!"

or am I just too cynical?

But is it Intelligent Design if you're the one playing God?

Only if you actually come up with a successful lifeform.

Otherwise it's Pretty Goofy Design.

OK. I need a new PC (with a >8Mb graphics card that actually has some 3D capability), a copy of this game and a very understanding wife.

Well, one out of three isn't bad.

The great part about it for CS majors and Biology/Computing freaks is, it's going to be a massive rollout of an artificial life simulator. Plus, when you share your little freaks with others, the program doesn't send the entirety of the creature - it sends the blueprint, and every client is capable of reproducing creatures from blueprints. As well as seeing what happens when Blueprint A and Blueprint B share bits via, uh - retroviral infections. yeah.

Massive demonstration of evolution in action in an artificial biosphere = fun biology education.

Oh yes. And apparently the amount of information needed to describe a creature is about 1 kilobyte. It's just stunning.

I'd buy a PC to play this. Seriously.

Plus - think of the outraged xtians! It's got evolution, non-Ptolomeic astronomy, and it's a Godgame - three out of three.

You know what amuses me? The Wiki entry for "Will Wright" redirects to the one for "God".
